Margaret Knight, ATI, Alexander TechniqueMargaret Knight, a certified Alexander Technique teacher, has been doing healing work for twenty years on Martha's Vineyard. She has a background in modern dance and improvisation and has studied Authentic Movement, Mindell's Process Work and Cranial-Sacral Therapy.Alexander Technique is a mind-body approach to regaining natural coordination and to changing habits of movement and consciousness. It's a way to improve how we use ourselves- the way we do things- to affect the results of what we're doing, whether that's playing an instrument, sitting at a computer, lifting weights or just walking down the street. The Technique has been called a pre-technique because a person can apply it to any skill or activity. It's a way to improve and maintain health, as well as to help recover from injury, relieve chronic tension and help posture and alignment. The individual is the focus in the Alexander Technique. Each person learns differently, so word, touch and visual example are all used as needed to help a person understand their own movement habits and how to tap into their innate coordination. Learning happens through hands-on work on the table- gentle energy releasing of old muscular holding patterns, and through exploring movement in simple, everyday activities like walking and bending. The result of this work often brings a pleasure to movement and a clarity to thought. |
